Editing
Editing is the process of selecting different shots and putting them together to create a story, which usually consist of non-diagestic sounds which is used to create tension or happiness, It is sounds that the character cannot hear except the viewers. A lot of the time long shots are used to show the environment and see where the character is, and what is happening in the surroundings. Another technique that is also used is Elliptical editing which is used to fill in the gaps and allows the viewers to grasps the storyline instead of showing all of the action.
Overhead establishing shot is a technique used to help the viewers understand the relationship between characters, from when the camera is looking over the character's shoulder, also sets out space where action takes place and position. A Reversing shot is when the camera cuts back and the forth between the characters, we understand that they are talking and looking at each other. It is common for the Eye Line Matching Technique which shows the characters looking at each other in the same direction in the same angle. Quick-Cuts are used to create a fast pace and keep the audience interested. the Hustle is a good example, because it always has all these types of shots used and also always cuts to other members of the group to show the other characters and their reaction to a plan that is being laid out.
Action movies commonly use cross-cutting, which is when shots cut to other characters then back to the main character and use reaction shots, which is shots cut to the other characters face then back to the main to see their reaction. Also action movies commonly do Seemless editing, which is when so much things happen on screen that the viewers are not aware of the editing. Jump Cuts used to be avoided by directors but then later on it was seen as an effective technique. Flashback - takes the audience back to the characters past or a past event, this helps the viewers understand the backstory of the event.
Editing can be used poetically- it can make the audience feel certain feelings towards the movie due to perfect shots used to create possibly sympathy for the characters and sometimes certain shots eg. Wide Shot create a cliff hanger causing the audience to work out what would happen.
